The mechanism beneath the vocabulary - biological foundations, cognition, development, disorders, social structure, and health inequality.
Ionotropic receptors are ligand-gated ion channels: the receptor protein itself is the channel. When neurotransmitter binds, the channel opens within microseconds, allowing ions to flow down their electrochemical gradients. The response is fast, local, and brief. Examples: GABA-A (chloride channel → hyperpolarization), AMPA and NMDA receptors (cation channels → depolarization), nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (cation channel → depolarization), and 5-HT3 (cation channel). Metabotropic receptors are G-protein-coupl…
Every chapter runs the same four moves - discriminator, why-box, clinical bridge, and high-yield anchor - plus MCAT-format practice passages.
